Fascino d'Italia: viaggi, visioni e aspettative dall'epoca del Grand Tour a Vernon Lee

Abstract

Questo elaborato ha l’obiettivo di mostrare come l’Italia venne percepita, rappresentata e trasfigurata dai viaggiatori inglesi durante il tardo XVIII ed il primo XIX secolo. Il primo capitolo introduce brevemente il Grand Tour, che fu l’inizio di tutto questo. Il secondo capitolo analizza dettagliatamente le ragioni per cui l’Italia attraeva in particolar modo i turisti inglesi. Nel terzo capitolo, particolare attenzione verrà data ad autrici inglesi, soprattutto a quelle che hanno visitato e si sono trasferite in Italia, come Elizabeth Barrett Browning o Ouida, descrivendo il paese nelle loro opere. Nel quarto capitolo, che a mio parere è il più importante, mi focalizzo sull’autrice Vernon Lee, donna così tanto innamorata dell’Italia da rappresentarla come la dimora del suo Genius Loci e del passato.

This dissertation aims to show how Italy was perceived, represented and transfigured by British travellers in the late 18th- early nineteenth centuries. My first chapter briefly introduces the Grand Tour, which was, so to speak, the beginning of all this. The second chapter goes more into detail discovering the reasons why Italy attracted English tourists in particular. In the third chapter, special attention will be given to women authors, mainly to those who visited and then settled in Italy, such as Elizabeth Barrett Browning or Ouida, describing it in their works. In the fourth chapter, which is to me the most important, my main focus is on Vernon Lee, who was truly in love with Italy, representing it as the home of Genius Loci and of the past.
