Bioaerosol is one of the components of the broad category of pollutants grouped under the term aerosol or atmospheric particulate matter. Bioaerosol not only interacts with the other components of the atmospheric medium but contributes directly to determine its properties. The bacterial component is particularly important for variety of composition and effects, ranging from pathogenicity on animals and plants to the impact on climate (cloud formation). The relationship between bacterial viability and atmospheric conditions, meteorology and air quality is a relevant topic but little explored. In this work we propose to exploit the opportunities offered by the atmospheric simulation chamber ChAMBRe, installed at DIFI, to quantitatively study the dose-effect relationship between bacterial viability and concentration in the atmosphere of typical pollutants of heavily populated areas. The goal is to develop and implement an experimental procedure that guarantees sufficient sensitivity to appreciate variations in viability and that can be adopted for systematic studies.
