In recent years, the theme of welfare and in particular corporate welfare is increasingly relevant and important. In itself, both welfare state and corporate welfare measures have a similar object and objective: the well-being of citizens in the first case and the well-being of workers in the enterprise in the other.
The welfare state is a set of institutions with which the state guarantees citizens protection against risks and needs. The welfare state became more widespread from the end of World War II until the mid-1970s, during the so-called Thirty Glorious. This period is defined as the golden age of the welfare state because of the special favourable conditions for its development. Since the second half of the 1970s, the welfare state and its systems guaranteed by the various States have had to adapt to new conditions and to new social needs and risks. Between the two phenomena the corporate welfare is surely the most recent one. It spread in the 1980s, but its roots date back to the 19th century. Corporate welfare refers to goods and services that are recognised and offered by the employer to its employees and their family members. The welfare state and corporate welfare respond to different purposes and logics: the first public and the second private.
