L’educazione del carattere tra Virtue Ethics e Philosophy for Children

Abstract

L’elaborato tratta l'importanza della formazione del carattere all'interno del percorso formativo con particolare attenzione allo sviluppo, in età prescolare e scolare, delle virtù morali. La domanda di ricerca verte pertanto nell’individuazione di un buon modello teorico, nonché in una sua conseguente e possibile modalità applicativa, per lo sviluppo del carattere e delle virtù. Per fare questo, l'elaborato è pensato in quattro capitoli fondamentali. Il primo capitolo, introduttivo, traccia una struttura ragionata utile alla comprensione dei nuclei tematici fondamentali. Il secondo capitolo affronta la proposta del modello cosiddetto “standard”, modello oggi maggiormente diffuso nell'ambito della character education. Di questo, sono stati analizzati i presupposti teorici, le implicazioni, i punti di forza e i limiti concettuali; è stato poi lasciato spazio di riflessione circa il Jubilee Center, centro di studi della University of Birmingham, che più chiaramente vede l'applicazione del modello standard. Il terzo capitolo è dedicato al modello ARETAI, sviluppato dal “Centro interuniversitario di ricerca ARETAI. Center on Virtues - ARETAI”, in controproposta al modello standard. Dopo averne descritto il lato teorico, è stato mostrato tramite confronto come esso rappresenti una valida, e per certi versi più convincente, alternativa al modello standard. Il quarto capitolo illustra la pratica filosofica della “Philosophy for Children”, avendo cura di darne una contestualizzazione storica e una narrazione essenziale della visione del suo fondatore, Matthew Lipmann, cui seguiranno riflessioni sulle eventuali somiglianze teoriche e le possibilità applicative al modello ARETAI. Le conclusioni raccolgono le riflessioni ultime e personali, nonché ulteriori spunti per continuare la ricerca.

The paper deals with the importance of character formation within the educational path, with particular attention to the development, in preschool and school age, of moral virtues. The research question therefore concerns the identification of a good theoretical model, as well as its consequent and possible application for the development of character and virtues. To do this, the paper is divided into four basic chapters. The first introductory chapter outlines a reasoned structure to help understand the core themes. The second chapter deals with the proposal of the so-called "standard" model, which is now more widespread in the field of character education. The theoretical assumptions, implications, strengths and conceptual limits of this were analysed; space was then left for reflection on the Jubilee Center, study centre of the University of Birmingham, which sees the application of the standard model more clearly. The third chapter is devoted to the ARETAI model, developed by the "ARETAI Inter-university Research Centre. Center on Virtues - ARETAI", in contrast to the standard model. After describing the theoretical side, it was shown by comparison how it represents a valid, and in some ways more convincing, alternative to the standard model. The fourth chapter illustrates the philosophical practice of "Philosophy for Children", taking care to give a historical contextualization and an essential narrative of the vision of its founder, Matthew Lipmann, who will then discuss the possible theoretical similarities and application possibilities of the ARETAI model. The conclusions contain final and personal reflections, as well as further ideas for continuing research.
