La Navigatio Sancti Brendani. Un viaggio verso il meraviglioso

Abstract

La Navigatio Sancti Brendani è un'opera medievale latina di area irlandese, scritta fra il IX ed il X secolo. Essa racconta le stupefacenti avventure di una compagnia di monaci che, guidati dal loro santo abate Brendano, partono alla ricerca del Paradiso terrestre. La Navigatio occupa un posto assolutamente privilegiato nel ricco e complesso panorama della storia religiosa dell’Irlanda altomedievale. Vera e propria “Odissea monastica”, la Navigatio accoglie e “cristianizza” l’eredità della tradizione celtica dei cosiddetti Echtrai e Immrama, racconti di viaggio alla ricerca d’un “Altro mondo” popolato da creature fantastiche ed esseri dotati di poteri magici. Grazie a questa capacità ricettiva, che adatta gli elementi meravigliosi provenienti dalla tradizione pagana e li amalgama al sostrato culturale cristiano, questo testo, oltre a fornire un prontuario di exempla d’obbedienza e di pietà religiosa, risponde anche a quei canoni che definiscono il romanzo d’avventura, volto al puro e semplice intrattenimento. Ho voluto affrontare quest’argomento di tesi attraverso una modalità che mi permettesse di analizzare quest’opera letteraria, inserendola nel suo corrispettivo contesto storico e vedendo così le diverse realtà che hanno caratterizzato questo particolare tipo di narrazione.

The Navigatio Sancti Brendani is a medieval Latin work from the Irish area, written between the 9th and 10th centuries. It tells the amazing adventures of a company of monks who, led by their holy abbot Brendan, set out in search of the Earthly Paradise. The Navigatio occupies an absolutely privileged place in the rich and complex panorama of the religious history of early medieval Ireland. A true "monastic Odyssey", the Navigatio welcomes and "Christianizes" the legacy of the Celtic tradition of the so-called Echtrai and Immrama, travel stories in search of an "Other World" populated by fantastic creatures and beings endowed with magical powers. Thanks to this receptive capacity, which adapts the marvelous elements from pagan tradition and blends them with the Christian cultural substratum, this text, in addition to providing a handbook of exempla of obedience and religious piety, also responds to those canons that define the adventure novel, aimed at pure and simple entertainment. I wanted to approach this thesis topic through a method that would allow me to analyze this literary work, placing it in its corresponding historical context and thus seeing the different realities that have characterized this particular type of narration.
