All'origine del «caso De Roberto». Le prime recensioni de I Viceré.

Abstract

In questo elaborato ho cercato di ricostruire le vicissitudini che hanno portato i critici a parlare del «caso De Roberto», un caso di ingiustizia che vide coinvolta l’opera di Federico De Roberto e la sua presunta sfortuna. Il fulcro della mia ricerca è I Viceré. Ho ripercorso, seguendo un ordine cronologico, gli interventi che furono pubblicati a partire dai primi del Novecento, indagando le probabili motivazioni avanzate da insigni studiosi per giustificare il presunto insuccesso del capolavoro derobertiano. Mi sono soffermata particolarmente sulla stroncatura di Benedetto Croce, che nel 1939 ghigliottinò il romanzo e il suo autore con un giudizio severo e sferzante. Dopo aver individuato gli episodi nella storia della critica che condussero a una rivalutazione de I Viceré, ho dedicato la mia ricerca al reperimento degli articoli di giornale in cui il romanzo venne recensito all’indomani della sua pubblicazione: interventi comparsi tra il 1894 e il 1915, raccolti al fine di valutare la ricezione del pubblico, che, a detta di vari studiosi, sin da subito fu negativa. Al contrario, giornalisti di tutta Italia si espressero positivamente sulla voluminosa opera cui protagonista fu la nobile famiglia siciliana degli Uzeda. Ho individuato alcune tematiche che in ventiquattro articoli erano comparse variamente, per affrontarle costruendo un discorso quanto più omogeneo possibile. Analisi su personaggi, contesto storico, struttura e forma del romanzo, si sono susseguite, parallelamente all’analisi di alcuni difetti dell’opera. Recensioni, quelle reperite, scritte per la maggior parte da figure appartenenti al panorama intellettuale dell’epoca su influenti testate giornalistiche. È stata infine inserita un’appendice nella quale compaiono le trascrizioni delle recensioni che ho avuto a disposizione al fine di facilitarne la consultazione. In seguito alle ricerche effettuate, si può affermare che I Viceré di Federico De Roberto incontrarono il favore del pubblico.

In this project, I tried to trace the path that led the critics to talk about the «caso De Roberto», that is a case of injustice that involved the work of Federico De Roberto and his supposed misfortune.The center of this research is precisely I Viceré. I chronologically traced the most incisive publications appeared from the beginning of the XXth century on, and investigated the most likely motivations given by distinguished scholars to justify the supposed misfortune of the De Roberto’s masterpiece. In particular, I dwelled on the harsh criticism written by Benedetto Croce in 1939, when he guillotined the novel with a tough and biting review. After pointing out the steps that led to a reconsideration of I Viceré in the history of criticism, I focused my research on sourcing newspaper articles in which the novel was reviewed once it was published. I went through reviews appeared between 1894 and 1915, collected to examine the public reaction, that, according to the scholars, was negative right from the beginning. On the contrary, journalists from all around Italy were excited about the voluminous novel, main characters of which were the members of a noble Sicilian family: the Uzeda. Then I gathered some issues that variously appeared in the twenty-four articles I could find, to realize a reflection as logical as best. In all these reviews, a number of analysis about characters, historical context, structure and style of the novel followed, as well as the analysis of the flaws of the book. Most of them were written by journalists who belonged to the scholar community of that time and that were published by the most influent newspaper. At the end there is also an appendix where I transcribed all the reviews considered in the project, so that the consulting process could get easier. Thanks to the researches I made, I can finally state that the novel I Viceré by Federico De Roberto met the taste of the public when it was released, positively impacting on the critics.
