Il Cambiamento Climatico come causa di conflitto. Il caso del Delta del Niger.

Abstract

La dissertazione vuole sostenere la tesi per cui il depauperamento ambientale, a certe condizioni, può essere una causa di conflitto. Viene preso in esame il caso del Delta del Niger, ricco di petrolio. Si dimostra che la popolazione della regione non gode di alcun dividendo sociale degli enormi proventi dell'industria petrolifera che però provoca effetti devastanti sull'ambiente, con gravissime conseguenza per la vita degli abitanti. Si studia infine il conflitto civile che agita la regione da decenni e si tenta di stabilire un nesso con la devastazione ambientale.

The dissertation seeks to support the thesis that environmental depletion, under certain conditions, can be a cause of conflict. The case of the oil-rich Niger Delta is examined. It is shown that the people of the region do not enjoy any social dividend from the enormous revenues of the oil industry, which, however, has devastating effects on the environment, with very serious consequences for the lives of the inhabitants. Finally, the civil conflict that has been shaking the region for decades is studied and a connection to the environmental devastation is attempted.
