This work focuses on children’s publishing in Italy, through a comparison between two very different publishing houses: Giunti Editore and Babalibri.
The approach used for the research is initially based on data and statistics in the specific field and then the research focuses on the catalogues of the two publishers chosen.
The first chapter gives a historical overview of publishing for children and young people in Italy, starting from the Unification of Italy. In addition, the main publishing houses involved are described, including both large publishing groups and independent publishing houses, which offer proposals for children.
The second and third chapters are dedicated respectively to Giunti Editore and Babalibri. We explore the peculiarities of these two publishing houses and their catalogues. Giunti Editore, is a historic Florentine publishing house founded in 1841, offers a wide catalogue and ranges between the various segments of publishing, including children’s and early childhood. Babalibri, on the other hand, is an independent publishing house with a more recent history, founded in Milan in 1999 and dedicated exclusively to children’s publishing.
The fourth chapter compares the two publishing houses, highlighting the different ways in which Giunti Editore and Babalibri live the experience of the world of children. Aspects such as the presence of bookshops, the promotion of reading through laboratories, libraries and trade fairs, as well as the impact of new technologies and digital publishing on the industry are analysed.
Finally, the last chapter is dedicated to the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, the world’s leading event in the field of children’s and youth publishing. The initiatives proposed during the fair are described and a personal experience is shared.
