This thesis stems from the internship experience carried out at Regione Liguria and focused on the analysis and study of the Tourism Satellite Account document for Liguria and its methodology.
The paper is structured in three chapters and is enriched with some graphical evidence, to make understanding the impact of tourism on the economy and the environment more intuitive.
The first chapter, after providing a few more precise definitions of 'tourism' and 'tourist', outlines an overview of the main surveys, research and studies in the field of tourism; in doing so, it highlights which bodies, both institutional and non-institutional, are involved in providing statistical data on tourism, with the aim of guaranteeing the public some informative documents or laying the foundations for possible subsequent studies that take into consideration, in a joint manner, more elements, in addition to those belonging to the tourism phenomenon itself.
The second chapter relates tourism to the environment, explaining what is meant by 'sustainable tourism' and what practices should be followed to put it into practice. In the course of the chapter, all attempts at statistically measuring the sustainability of tourism are analysed and it is explained why and how the Tourism Satellite Account document is useful to understand how much tourism actually affects the GDP of a given country and, consequently, what could be improved in order to increase the added value directly generated by the tourism sector. In addition, the second chapter highlights how the recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic can be taken as a starting point for rethinking tourism that is sustainable and respectful of the environment and people.
The final chapter concerns the case study of the thesis: Liguria; explaining what perspective the Tourism Satellite Account has in the regional context and focusing on all the 'green', and therefore sustainable, possibilities offered by the region to potential tourists.
