| it_IT |
dc.description.abstract | Introduction: in the study of MS only a few biomarkers have been used in clinical practice yet. However, it is a promising field of research. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of some serum and salivary biomarkers (NFL, IL-6, BDNF) in MS patients as a tool for monitoring rehabilitation effects.
Materials and methods: 30 healthy controls (age 33-75 years) and 18 patients with MS (age 34-74 years) were involved. Subjects with MS were randomized into two rehabilitation groups: classic and virtual reality. Blood and salivary samples and functional evaluations were carried out at baseline, after two months of observation and after two months of rehabilitation.
Results: at baseline NFL in serum of MS patients 30.39±12.10 pg/ml and in saliva 14.52±3.39 pg/ml, concentrations above the control average. IL-6 in serum of MS patients 3.05±1.93 pg/ml and in saliva 4.27±4.88 pg/ml, without significant differences compared to controls. BDNF in serum of MS patients 52228.67±24124.95 pg/ml, higher than the average of controls. After rehabilitation serum NFL levels showed an increasing trend, no statistical significance in saliva. IL-6 does not appear to be changed in serum, it has a decreasing trend in saliva. BDNF shows an increasing trend.
Conclusions: serum has been proved to be adequate for the study of the examined molecules, while saliva does not appear adequate for the evaluation of BDNF. In some cases there is a correlation (IL-6 serum and saliva), but the values in the serum appear more consistent and less fluctuating. NFL and BDNF are increased in patients after rehabilitation surgery. This may prove a structural change of the white component, while BDNF could prove a mild basal neuroplasticity. The preliminary data are promising and it is not excluded that, with a larger population, the highlighted trends could become significant. | en_UK |
