Due categorie dell’arte: genere e medium

Abstract

L’obiettivo di questa tesi è analizzare le categorie artistiche di genere e di medium nell'ambito dell'estetica, il modo in cui interagiscono tra di loro e che relazione abbiano con le diverse forme d'arte. Nel primo capitolo si elencano alcune delle più note teorie filosofiche dei generi nelle arti, in particolare le arti narrative come cinema, letteratura e teatro, in cui si propone, per esempio, di identificarli con i loro scopi, le loro tradizioni o le aspettative che creano nel fruitore. Si giunge alla conclusione che il modello più adatto per spiegare il genere sia il concetto a grappolo. Si illustra inoltre brevemente in che modo il genere influisca sull’apprezzamento delle opere d’arte da parte dei fruitori. Nel secondo capitolo si definisce la nozione di medium artistico e ci si interroga se una forma d’arte possa essere priva di medium, facendo riferimento a opere di arte d’avanguardia e installation art. In relazione a quest’ultimo aspetto si prende in esame la proposta del profilo mediale contrapposto al medium singolo. Si introduce anche il concetto di selezione mediale. Nel terzo e ultimo capitolo si esplorano i rapporti tra genere, medium e forma d’arte, soprattutto per quanto riguarda i generi cinematografici della commedia, l’horror, il noir e la fantascienza. Si precisa infine in quali aspetti differiscano i due concetti a grappolo di genere e di forma d’arte.

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the artistic categories of genre and medium in the field of aesthetics, how they interact with each other and what relationship they have with the various art forms. The first chapter lists some of the best known philosophical theories of genres in the arts, in particular the narrative arts such as cinema, literature and theatre, in which it is proposed, for example, to identify them with their purposes, their traditions or the expectations that they create in the public. It is concluded that the most suitable model to explain genre is the cluster concept. It is also briefly illustrated how genre affects the appreciation of works of art by the public. The second chapter defines the notion of artistic medium and questions whether an art form can be without a medium, referring to works of avant-garde art and installation art. In relation to this last aspect, the proposal of the medium profile as opposed to the single medium is examined. The concept of media selection is also introduced. The third and final chapter explores the relationships between genre, medium and art form, especially with regard to the film genres of comedy, horror, noir and science fiction. Finally, it is specified in which aspects the two cluster concepts of genre and art form differ.
