Il meraviglioso come fonte di svago: il Libro delle meraviglie di Gervasio di Tilbury

Abstract

Composti fra il XII e il XIII secolo, gli "Otia imperialia", in particolare il terzo libro, dell'intellettuale inglese Gervasio di Tilbury rappresentano uno spaccato della società medievale di cui è possibile cogliere tutte le sue peculiarità. Il presente elaborato, concentrandosi approfonditamente sul terzo libro dell'opera, si suddivide in tre capitoli: il primo incentrato sulla figura poco nota di Gervasio di Tilbury; il secondo volto ad analizzare il "Libro delle meraviglie" cercando di metterne in risalto struttura, stile e contenuti; il terzo, infine, dedicato ad approfondire alcune categorie di protagonisti di questo libro che, ancora oggi, destano grande interesse nel lettore.

Composed between the 12th and 13th centuries, the 'Otia imperialia', in particular the third book, by the English intellectual Gervase of Tilbury represent a cross-section of medieval society of which all its peculiarities can be grasped. This paper, concentrating in depth on the third book of the work, is divided into three chapters: the first focusing on the little-known figure of Gervase of Tilbury; the second aimed at analysing the "Book of Marvels", attempting to highlight its structure, style and contents; the third, finally, dedicated to delving into certain categories of protagonists of this book that, even today, still arouse great interest in the reader.
