The focus of my master's thesis is the Liguria Region and the tourist promotion of its territory, which is increasingly trying to carve out a space for itself among its major national and international competitors, as we will discover through the preferences of Russian tourists. In this regard, an analysis was conducted on Russian tourists' interest in Ligurian destinations, who rely on social media recommendations to discover the most interesting places the territory can offer.
After providing an introduction to the history of Russian tourism in Italy, tourism in Russian literature was analysed with the first authors who were lucky enough to discover Liguria. Thanks to their stories, it was possible to familiarise with their feelings during their stays in the region, or to discover that for some of them Genoa was 'superior to all the other cities in Italy [...]' . It was also important to analyse Russians' favourite destinations in Italy, their typical profile, their particular interest in Made in Italy and the phenomenon of 'shopping tourism', which is often associated with Russian tourists who are considered the top spenders par excellence.
It was interesting to learn about the use and popularity rankings on TripAdvisor (Russian version) that create a complete picture of Russian tourists' preferences on hotels, restaurants and destinations. In addition, we will focus on the new technologies that are revolutionising the tourism sector year after year, giving rise to a new type of tourist: "the 2.0 tourist".
The aim of the thesis is therefore to investigate the role of social media in the tourism sector with a particular focus on the promotional strategies implemented by the Ligurian Region. The aim is to demonstrate how much and in what way this new type of tourism promotion is increasing the Liguria Region's notoriety.
