Abstract

Questa tesi si concentra sull’opera di Ben Jonson The Staple of News, un’arguta critica al mondo contemporaneo che vede l’informazione venduta per pochi soldi, ma senza certezza di veridicità o di rilevanza. È un’osservazione sulla cultura e su come essa viene acquisita dai suoi concittadini, che prevalentemente optano solo per una visione e conoscenza superficiale dei fatti e hanno solo voglia di immergersi in fatti scandalistici. La tesi è organizzata in quattro capitoli che esplorano la vita e le opere dell'autore, il periodo storico, il genere e i temi e un'analisi approfondita del linguaggio figurativo usato da Jonson.

This thesis focuses on Ben Jonson's work The Staple of News, a witty critique of the contemporary world in which information is sold for cheap, but without certainty of veracity or relevance. It is an observation on culture and how it is acquired by his fellow citizens, who predominantly opt only for a superficial view and knowledge of facts and have only the desire to immerse themselves in scandalous facts. The thesis is organised into four chapters that explore the author's life and works, historical period, genre and themes, and an in-depth analysis of the figurative language used by Jonson.
