L'eredità di Orwell

Abstract

Dalla sua morte nel 1950, l’importanza di George Orwell non è mai diminuita. La sua opera è stata oggetto di studio e lettura nel corso degli ultimi settant’anni e ha influenzato diverse generazioni. Inoltre, l’eredità di Orwell è permeata attraverso la cultura popolare delle ultime sette decadi. Oltre a costituire un pilastro della narrativa distopica, le opere più famose di Orwell, in particolare Animal Farm e 1984, hanno ispirato, tra gli altri, registi cinematografici, artisti, produttori televisivi e radiofonici. L’influenza degli scritti orwelliani è particolarmente sorprendente nella musica: dall’opera classica alla moderna musica pop, musicisti e autori di brani musicali sono spesso stati ispirati dalle tematiche e dalle atmosfere orwelliane. Artisti del calibro di John Lennon, The Clash o i Radiohead hanno fatto riferimenti e citazioni delle opere dell’autore. 1984 costituisce un vero punto di riferimento per la cultura punk. La band progressive rock britannica Pink Floyd ha pubblicato un album interamente ispirato ad Animal Farm e l’artista inglese David Bowie aveva avuto l’idea di realizzare un musical basato su 1984. Del progetto, successivamente abbandonato, ci rimangono diversi brani musicali raccolti in un concept album. Lo scopo di questo lavoro è indagare le ragioni di un successo così longevo. In primo luogo, sarà fornita una breve biografia dell’autore, concentrandosi principalmente su quelle esperienze che hanno contribuito al formarsi della sua visione sociopolitica, seguita da un’analisi del messaggio contenuto nelle sue opere più famose, Animal farm e 1984. Quindi, esaminerò l’importanza di tale messaggio nei vari momenti storici che si sono succeduti dal 1950 ad oggi, prima di vedere come esso abbia influenzato la cultura popolare e la produzione artistica. In particolare, mi concentrerò sulla popular music, specialmente sul genere rock a partire dagli anni ’70 fino ad arrivare ai giorni nostri.

Since his death in 1950, George Orwell’s importance has never declined. His works have been read throughout the last seventy years and have influenced several generations. Moreover, Orwell’s legacy has permeated the popular culture of the last seven decades. Besides being a pillar of dystopian narrative, Orwell’s most famous works, especially Animal Farm and 1984, have inspired amongst others, film directors, artists, television and radio show producers. A stunning influence of such works can be observed in the music field: from classical opera to modern pop music, musicians and songwriters have often been inspired by Orwellian atmospheres and themes. Artists of the stature of John Lennon, The Clash or Radiohead have quoted and referred to the writer’s main works. 1984 constitutes a real reference point for the punk culture. The British progressive rock band Pink Floyd published an album entirely inspired by Animal Farm and the English eclectic artist David Bowie had the idea to turn 1984 into a musical production. From the abandoned project, we are left with several songs collected in a concept album. The aim of this work is to investigate the reasons for such long-term success. Firstly, a short biography of the author will be provided, paying attention to those experiences which contributed to the shaping of his socio-political thought, followed by an analysis of the message conveyed by his most famous writings, 1984 and Animal Farm. Then I will focus on the relevance of such a message throughout the historical moments that occurred from 1950 until today, before analysing the way it influenced popular culture and artistic production. In particular, I will concentrate on popular music and especially on rock music ranging from the 1970s to the present day.
