Le 3R, la modificazione genetica degli animali e la sostituzione assoluta: traduzione e analisi.

Abstract

La presente tesi verte sulla traduzione dei capitoli 19 e 27 del volume Animal Experimentation: Working Towards a Paradigm Change, a cura di Kathrin Hermann e Kimberley Jayne, il quale si propone di offrire una valutazione critica dell'attuale impiego degli animali a fini scientifici e di analizzare i modi con cui è possibile contribuire a un cambiamento di prospettiva verso approcci basati sulla biologia umana. La tesi è suddivisa in due capitoli, ognuno dei quali comprende quattro sezioni: il testo in lingua inglese, l'analisi del TP, la proposta di traduzione in lingua italiana e il commento alla traduzione. Ciò che emerge dall'analisi e dal commento dei tue testi di partenza è una differenza tra i due capitoli dovuta a una maggiore specificità terminologica del capitolo 19, fattore che ha comportato per lo stesso un maggior numero di problemi traduttivi a livello lessicale, ma anche una duplice funzione in entrambi i capitoli, ossia informativa e operativa. Entrambi gli autori dei due capitoli, infatti, non solo si propongono di trasmettere informazioni, in alcuni punti altamente specifiche, ma anche di convincere il lettore della validità della tesi riportata, ossia la necessità urgente di scostarsi dall'impiego di animali nella ricerca scientifica e il fatto che quelle che Russell e Burch definiscono "alternative" o "metodi alternativi" in realtà comportino comunque l'impiego diretto o indiretto di animali che, pertanto, provano sofferenza. Nel corso dell'analisi e del commento traduttivo viene posta particolare attenzione al linguaggio valutativo utilizzato dall'autore per creare un'ideologia che il testo di propone di trasmettere e le strategie di foregrounding, impiegate per mettere in primo piano le informazioni ritenute fondamentali. Infine, nel commento traduttivo vengono esposti i problemi traduttivi riscontrati e gli interventi realizzati per risolverli.

This thesis focuses on the translation of Chapter 19 and Chapter 27 of the book entitled Animal Experimentation: Working Towards a Paradigm Change by Kathrin Hermann and Kimberley Jayne, which aims to provide a critical evaluation of the current use of animals in science and to analyse the ways by which it is possible to contribute to a paradigm change towards human-based approaches. The thesis is divided in two chapters, each of which consists of four sections: the English text, its analysis, the translated text and a comment about the translation. What emerges from the analysis and the comments about the two source texts is a difference between the two chapters due to more specific lexical information provided by Chapter 19, which resulted in more translation problems from a lexical point of view, but also a double function in both Chapter 19 and 27, namely informative and operative. Indeed, both the authors of the two chapters don’t only seek to convey information, which in some parts of the texts is highly specific, but also to convince the reader of the validity of the theory supported by the author, namely the need to move away from animal use in science and the fact that what Russell and Burch define as “alternatives” still involve the direct or indirect use of animals which experience pain and distress. Particular attention is paid to the evaluative language used by the author to create an ideology which the texts aim to convey and the foregrounding strategies applied to the important information. Finally, the translation problems and their resolution are discussed in the comment about the translation.
