Fiat iustitia et pereat mundus: mulier rea?

Abstract

Il presente elaborato propone uno studio relativo alla violenza di genere nella Roma antica attraverso l'analisi di fonti letterarie, epigrafiche ed archeologiche. Il lavoro si articola in due parti: la prima analizza l’origine del termine stuprum dal punto di vista linguistico e l’impatto che questa violenza aveva nella società romana. Infine, esamina i provvedimenti legislativi introdotti al fine di arginare detta piaga sociale. La seconda si concentra sull’analisi del risvolto più raccapricciante della violenza domestica, il femminicidio, attraverso lo studio di alcuni emblematici casi per la rappresentazione di una società come quella romana, piena di luci e ombre.

This paper proposes a study on gender violence in ancient Rome through the analysis of literary, epigraphic and archaeological sources. The work is divided into two parts: the first analyzes the origin of the term stuprum from a linguistic point of view and the impact that this violence had on Roman society. Finally, it examines the legislative measures introduced in order to stem this social scourge. The second focuses on the analysis of the most gruesome aspect of domestic violence, femicide, through the study of some emblematic cases for the representation of a society like the Roman one, full of lights and shadows.
