La chora tarantina in età arcaica

Abstract

L'obiettivo della tesi è finalizzato ad indagare le dinamiche di occupazione del territorio e di seguire lo sviluppo dell'espansionismo degli apoikoi laconici nell'Arco Ionico Tarantino, nel periodo compreso tra la ktisis di Taranto e il primo ventennio del V secolo a.C. Sulla base dei dati raccolti, nel tardo arcaismo la chora tarantina arriva ad occupare un territorio di notevoli dimensioni e potenzialità economico-produttive, che richiama il pion demos promesso dall'oracolo delfico. Nella storia degli studi sulle chorai coloniali e sul rapporto polis-chora, il caso di Taranto è stato presentato come esempio di opposizione violenta nei confronti degli Iapigi, costretti ad arretrare dall'arco costiero ionico verso le prime propaggini delle Murge. Tuttavia, le ultime indagini archeologiche e la revisioni di alcuni interventi di scavo condotti in passato hanno fornito nuovi elementi incentrati sul tema della natura dei rapporti tra Greci ed indigeni durante le prime fasi di vita dell'apoikia.

The objective of this thesis aims to investigate the territorial occupation dynamics and to follow the development of the Laconic apoikoi's expansionism in the Ionic Arch of Taranto, during the timeframe between the ktisis of Taranto and the first twenty years of the fifth century BC. Based on the collected data, during the late Archaic Period, the Chora of Taranto was able to occupy a territory of remarkable dimensions with large economical-productive potentials, which recalls the pion demos that was promised by the Delphic Oracle. In the history of studies about the colonial chorai and the polis-chora relationship, Taranto's case was presented as an example of violent opposition against the Iapigi population, who was forced to retreat from the Ionic coastal arch towards the first offshoots of the Murge. Nevertheless, the latest archaeological investigations and the review of some excavation interventions that were carried out in the past provided new elements centered on the theme of the nature of the relationships between the Greeks and the indigenous people during the early stages of apoikia's life.
