La Belt and Road in Medio Oriente: I Casi dell'Iran e dell'Arabia Saudita

Abstract

Ultimamente la Cina ha promosso la Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), un progetto che consiste in diversi investimenti in tutto il mondo. Gli investimenti vengono promossi dalla Cina in svariati settori, dalle infrastrutture, che rappresentano il settore principale di investimenti della BRI, fino al settore sanitario. Il Medio Oriente ha sempre rappresentato un’area di grande interesse per la Cina, che ha cercato con costanza di aumentare il suo ascendente nella regione. In particolare, l’Arabia Saudita e l’Iran sono due stati di grande interesse per la Cina, considerata la loro importanza nel Medio Oriente. Questo ha portato il governo cinese ad aumentare la sua presenza e la collaborazione con questi due paesi. Più nello specifico la BRI dovrebbe lavorare all’unisono con la Saudi Vision 2030 e con l’accordo venticinquennale siglato tra Cina e Iran. L’obbiettivo di questa tesi è quello di fornire un quadro più chiaro della BRI e del suo impatto, concentrandosi principalmente su Arabia Saudita e Iran, e di come la BRI possa influire sia sulle dinamiche interne ai due paesi, sia sul Medio Oriente in Generale. Inoltre, la tesi si concentrerà anche sulle dinamiche create dalla rivalità tra i due paesi e sulle problematiche derivanti dalla presenza Statunitense in Medio Oriente.

In recent years, China has strongly promoted the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a project consisting of various investment across the world. These investments are conducted in a plethora of sectors, from infrastructures, which represent the main focus of the BRI, to healthcare. The Middle East has always been an area of interest for China, which has constantly attempted to increase its influence in the region. Saudi Arabia and Iran in particular, given their relevance in the Middle East, are of particular interest for China, which has increased its involvement within these two countries. In particular the BRI is set to play a relevant role in collaboration with the Saudi Vision 2030 and the 25 years agreement signed with Iran. This dissertation aims at shedding some light over the BRI and its impact. More specifically, the dissertation will provide both a general review of the initiative, as well as focusing on the investments conducted both in Saudi Arabia and Iran, their impact on each country as well as the relevance that the initiative might have on the region. The dissertation will also focus on the issues that the BRI might face in the Middle East considering not only the internal dynamics of both Iran and Saudi Arabia, but also the issues created by the rivalry between the two countries, as well as the issues originated by the role of the U.S. in the Middle East.
