Abstract

This thesis examines the role of family relationships in the development of mentalization and affect regulation, with particular attention to the possible implications of adverse childhood experiences for emotional and relational functioning. It explores the construct of mentalization, parental reflective functioning, and the main ways in which these dimensions have been operationalized in the literature, together with the development of emotion regulation within significant relationships and the possible impact of experiences of abuse and neglect. Within this theoretical framework, an empirical study was conducted with 163 young adults aged 18–25 to investigate the associations among adverse childhood experiences, emotion dysregulation, and dimensions of romantic attachment. The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire – Short Form, the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale, and the Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised were administered. The results showed differentiated associations depending on the specific adverse experience considered. Physical neglect was associated with greater difficulties in emotion regulation and remained significantly associated with the avoidant dimension of romantic attachment. Emotion dysregulation also moderated the relationship between physical abuse and attachment anxiety; the association between physical abuse and attachment anxiety was significant only in the presence of high levels of emotion dysregulation. Overall, the findings suggest that different forms of childhood adversity may be associated in different ways with emotional and relational functioning in young adulthood.
