Abstract

The research focuses on the cloister as a cultural space through an approach that encourages dialogue between history and literature. The first section traces the forms of control exercised over nuns by the Church and, within the Republic of Genoa, by the government and the Compagnia del Divino Amore. The life of Battistina Vernazza, a sixteenth-century Genoese nun particularly devoted to writing, offers an opportunity to reflect on the cultural practises permitted within the cloister, the supervision of nuns’ writings, and the publication of their literary works. Particular attention is devoted to the birth, after Vernazza’s death, of a convent school for secular girls attached to the convent, as well as the issues regarding the ascription of a poetry collection, published in the nineteenth century, to Battistina Vernazza and one of her fellow nuns. The last chapter of the thesis offers an analysis of Vernazza’s perspective on some historical events of her time: her father’s experiences as the founder of the Compagnia del Divino Amore, the Genoese crisis of 1575-1576, and a meeting with Margaret of Austria.
