Abstract

From the mid-1970s to the present, visual culture has dismantled the very idea of identity piece by piece, working through the most concrete matter there is: the body. Attention shifts from mere depiction, pictorial or photographic, to the live act of performance. The body ceases to be a fixed, given fact of nature and becomes the result, always provisional, never definitive, of an expressive construction. The research draws together phenomenology, poststructuralist semiotics and gender theory to trace a single thread running through fields that criticism has traditionally kept apart. The work is grounded in direct interviews with designers, archival documents, and exhibition catalogues from the Metropolitan Museum. The material gathered sets the punk bricolage of Vivienne Westwood and Jordan Mooney against the avant-garde tailoring of Alexander McQueen and Rei Kawakubo, before moving on to the most extreme actions of Body Art with Gina Pane, ORLAN, Leigh Bowery and the techno-organic prostheses of Rebecca Horn and Stelarc. The safety pin, the surgical incision, disproportion of form, robotic grafts: none of these can be called mere ornament. They are devices designed to blow the codes of the classical canon apart from within. The path arrives at Genesis P-Orridge, where surgical modification aims at total identity fusion, and the research thus reaches the very edges of the posthuman condition. Exposure to pain, to artifice, to aesthetic rupture is no provocative whim: it is an open question about the status of the body today a construction site that never stops transforming, a ground on which, always, a political battle is also being fought.
