Abstract

In the present study, associations between attachment patterns, reflective functioning, and internalizing and externalizing symptoms were explored in 41 participants aged 11 to 13 years old. The Friends and Family Interview (FFI) and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) were used to evaluate these constructs. The results showed negative statistically significant associations between reflective functioning and insecure-dismissing and disorganized-disoriented patterns of attachment. While secure attachment was found to be positively associated with reflective functioning and negatively associated with externalizing symptoms. The results also highlight negative associations between externalizing symptoms and the two insecure patterns, dismissing and preoccupied, the disorganized pattern and reflective functioning. The findings suggest the importance of promoting adolescents well-being by developing clinical interventions based on their internal and social worlds.
