Abstract

This thesis analyses the media coverage of the 2001 G8 summit in Genoa through a comparison between Corriere della Sera and The Guardian, two newspapers belonging to different national journalistic contexts. The aim of the research is to identify similarities and differences in the selection and representation of events, protesters and police forces, focusing particularly on the language used, the testimonies reported, the attention given to different actors and the attribution of responsibility. The analysis is based on a corpus of articles published mainly between 19 and 23 July 2001 and draws on the theoretical concepts of newsmaking, agenda-setting and framing. Particular attention is devoted to the clashes that occurred during the summit, the death of Carlo Giuliani and the raid on the Diaz school. The comparison shows that the two newspapers do not provide completely opposing representations of the event. While they share some criteria in the selection of relevant events, the main differences concern the importance attributed to the actors involved, their actions, the sources selected and the attribution of responsibility.
