This thesis analyzes the sigillata pottery found during the 2022 excavation campaign conducted by the University of Genoa at the archaeological site of Luni, in the Citadella area. The study examines a set of ceramic productions spanning the late Republican and early Imperial periods, with particular attention to Italic and Late Italic Terra Sigillata, South-Gallic Terra Sigillata, and Eastern Sigillata. Sigillata pottery represents one of the most significant ceramic classes of the Roman world for reconstructing the economic, commercial, and cultural dynamics of antiquity. Luni, a Roman colony founded in 177 BC at the mouth of the Magra River, occupied a strategic position along the northwestern Tyrrhenian coast and was an important trading hub between Italy, Gaul, and the western Mediterranean. The research is based on the typological and chronological analysis of the finds, considering shapes, clays, coatings, and stamps where present. The materials were compared with the main reference repertoires and with similar contexts from other Italic, Gallic, and Eastern sites. Particular attention was paid to the presence of South Gaulish sigillata, documented in significant quantities in Luni contexts from the 1st century AD. This presence is interpreted as evidence of the widespread diffusion of Gallic production in the western Mediterranean. The thesis also explores the technical and production aspects of sigillata pottery, focusing on manufacturing techniques, decorative methods, and firing processes. The historical evolution of the main Italic, South Gaulish, and Eastern productions is also outlined, highlighting the relationships between technological innovations, workshop organization, and the development of provincial markets. Overall, the study contributes to a better understanding of the economic and commercial dynamics of the city of Luni.en_UK
