IMMAGINI DI CULTO DAL LEVANTE MEDITERRANEO ALL’ITALIA CENTRO-SETTENTRIONALE: PERCORSI E TRACCE TRA XIII E XIV SECOLO

Abstract

La tesi indaga la circolazione, la ricezione e l'impatto delle immagini di culto dal Levante mediterraneo all'Italia centro-settentrionale tra il XIII e il XIV secolo. Lo studio esamina come il linguaggio artistico e spirituale bizantino sia penetrato nel tessuto identitario attraverso la mediazione delle Repubbliche Marinare. Il lavoro si articola in tre capitoli. Il primo capitolo analizza la funzione sociale e religiosa delle immagini nel Medioevo, distante dalla concezione estetica contemporanea, basandosi sui testi di Hans Belting ed Ernst Kitzinger. Il secondo capitolo ricostruisce lo scenario storico dei contatti trans-mediterranei e le dinamiche di alleanza e rivalità di Pisa, Genova e Venezia con l'Impero Bizantino. Infine, il terzo capitolo approfondisce l'integrazione di questi modelli nei contesti delle tre città marittime.

The thesis investigates the circulation, reception, and impact of cult images from the Mediterranean Levant to central-northern Italy between the 13th and 14th centuries. The study examines how Byzantine artistic and spiritual language penetrated the fabric of identity through the mediation of the Maritime Republics. The work is divided into three chapters. The first chapter analyzes the social and religious function of images in the Middle Ages, far removed from the contemporary aesthetic conception, based on the texts of Hans Belting and Ernst Kitzinger. The second chapter reconstructs the historical scenario of trans-Mediterranean contacts and the dynamics of alliance and rivalry of Pisa, Genoa, and Venice with the Byzantine Empire. While the third chapter delves into the integration of these models within the contexts of the three maritime cities.
