Abstract

The present work analyzes the school experience and identity construction of students with a migrant background, focusing on the gap between the institutional gaze and the students' own self-narratives. The objective is to deconstruct the daily mechanisms through which the school system, despite defining itself as inclusive, can reproduce inequalities and social marginalization. The thesis is divided into a theoretical section and empirical research. The theoretical section examines the defining power of teachers, analyzing how stereotypes, implicit biases, and microaggressions can shape students' trajectories. In parallel, it explores students' agency—namely, their capacity to react to these labels, manage stigma, and negotiate their plural belongings in order to "inhabit the threshold" between the family and school environments. The empirical research adopts a qualitative approach using the focus group technique, involving primary school teachers and secondary school students with a migrant background. The findings highlight a significant gap between the two universes: while teachers' discourses frequently oscillate between a rhetoric of hospitality and a paradigm that views diversity as a cultural or familial deficit, students demonstrate a sharp critical awareness of school dynamics and strongly reclaim their right to be heard and to self-determination.
