Abstract

Il presente lavoro analizza l’Homeromanteion, un dispositivo mantico basato sulla rifunzionalizzazione degli esametri omerici, attraverso lo studio dei principali testimoni papiracei: il P.Lond. 121 (PGM VII), il P.Oxy. 3831 e il P.Bon. 3. L’indagine si focalizza sul processo di trasformazione che l'epica subisce per divenire responso oracolare, evidenziando come le varianti testuali e le divergenze dalla tradizione omerica non siano errori copistici, ma adattamenti deliberati volti a conferire al verso un valore prescrittivo e universale. L’analisi si estende alla sociologia del rito, ricostruendo le modalità di consultazione basate sul lancio dei dadi e l’eterogeneità dei fruitori. L'elaborato restituisce l'immagine di un Omero "vivo", la cui auctoritas letteraria viene posta al servizio della praxis magica e delle necessità quotidiane nell'Egitto di epoca imperiale.

The present work analyzes the Homeromanteion, a mantic device based on the refunctionalization of Homeric hexameters, through the study of the main papyrological witnesses: P.Lond. 121 (PGM VII), P.Oxy. 3831 and P.Bon. 3. The investigation focuses on the process of transformation that the epic undergoes to become an oracular response, highlighting how the textual variants and the divergences from the Homeric tradition are not scribal errors, but deliberate adaptations aimed at conferring to the verse a prescriptive and universal value. The analysis extends to the sociology of the rite, reconstructing the methods of consultation based on the casting of dice and the heterogeneity of the users. The paper restores the image of a "living" Homer, whose literary auctoritas is placed at the service of the magical praxis and of the daily necessities in Egypt of the imperial era.
