La pirateria marittima: da strumento politico a crimine da debellare

Abstract

Lo scopo del presente elaborato è quello di delineare gli aspetti salienti della pirateria marittima, focalizzandosi sul periodo storico che va dalla scoperta dell’America a circa gli anni ’20 del XVIII secolo. Il primo capitolo ha carattere prettamente introduttivo e, unitamente a un breve excursus storico dell’antico fenomeno, comprende un approfondimento sugli sviluppi che questo tipo di criminalità ha subìto nell’ultimo ventennio, ricordando ai lettori che si tratta di una problema ancora molto presente ai giorni nostri. Il secondo capitolo si concentra sulla scoperta da parte degli europei delle ricchezze del Nuovo Mondo e sullo sviluppo delle nuove rotte commerciali atlantiche. Tali rotte saranno le tratte più battute dai pirati, soprattutto in funzione anti-spagnola e con l’obiettivo di indebolire la monarchia iberica. Proseguendo con il capitolo III, si ripercorre la storia dell’età dell’oro della pirateria focalizzandosi sulle vite di alcuni dei criminali più temuti dell’epoca; lo scopo è capire come i pirati vivessero e, soprattutto, quali motivazioni spingevano numerosi uomini, ma anche donne, a entrate a far parte di questo mondo oscuro. Infine, il capitolo conclusivo illustra come il fenomeno della pirateria, arrivato al proprio apice e ormai incontenibile alla fine del XVII secolo, sia drasticamente crollato in circa due decenni grazie al decisivo cambio d’atteggiamento delle potenze europee: se inizialmente la pirateria era vista come un utile e prezioso strumento politico, attorno al 1720 diventò ufficialmente un crimine internazionale da debellare con uno sforzo comune.

The purpose of this elaborate is to outline the key aspects of maritime piracy, focusing on the historical period ranging from the discovery of America to around the 1720s. The first chapter is mainly introductory and, after a brief historical excursus on this ancient phenomenon, includes an in-depth analysis of the developments piracy has in the past twenty years, reminding readers that it remains a highly relevant issue to this day. The second chapter focuses on the discovery of the New World by European powers and the subsequent development of new commercial and colonial routes. Particular attention is given to those routes most frequently attacked by pirates, especially in their anti-Spanish function and with the aim of weakening the Iberian monarchy. Continuing with Chapter III, the thesis retraces the history of the golden age of piracy, with a focus on the lives of some of the most feared criminals of the time. The objective is to understand how pirates lived and, above all, what motivations led numerous men - but also women - to become part of this dark world. Finally, the concluding chapter illustrates how the phenomenon of piracy, having reached its peak and become uncontrollable by the end of the 17th century, drastically collapsed within approximately two decades due to a decisive shift in the attitudes of European powers: whereas piracy was initially considered as a useful and valuable political tool, around 1720 it had officially become an international crime to be eradicated with a common effort.
