Turismo e cambiamento climatico: il caso studio delle Cinque Terre

Abstract

Questa tesi presenta un'analisi completa dell'interrelazione tra cambiamento climatico e turismo. Nello specifico, si concentra sulla città di Monterosso al Mare. La prima parte dello studio usa come base la letteratura esistente per fornire un'analisi del cambiamento climatico e delle sue conseguenze a livello globale. Inoltre, viene preso in esame il settore turistico e il suo legame con il cambiamento climatico. La relazione tra turismo e cambiamento climatico è bidirezionale. Da un lato, è fondamentale comprendere in che modo il turismo contribuisce al cambiamento climatico. Questo aspetto viene affrontato nel secondo capitolo, che analizza i dati sulle emissioni prodotte dal settore dei trasporti e dalle strutture ricettive. Dall'altro, è altrettanto importante esaminare come il cambiamento climatico influisce sul turismo. Tra gli esempi figurano il deterioramento delle destinazioni, il cambiamento della stagionalità e dei flussi turistici. Questi aspetti sono discussi nel terzo capitolo. Il quarto capitolo descrive il territorio delle Cinque Terre, la sua storia e le caratteristiche del turismo in questi piccoli paesi. Particolare attenzione è rivolta al fenomeno dell'overtourism. Il capitolo delinea gli effetti del cambiamento climatico sulle Cinque Terre, un'area particolarmente vulnerabile agli eventi meteorologici estremi. Infine, l'ultimo capitolo fornisce l'analisi e la discussione dei risultati dello studio condotto a Monterosso al Mare. È stato somministrato un questionario a 32 commercianti locali che lavorano e, per la maggior parte, vivono nella zona, con l'obiettivo di valutare la loro percezione del cambiamento climatico, di come questo si sia evoluto nel tempo e di come influenzi le loro attività e i flussi turistici. In conclusione, questa tesi vuole integrare conoscenze teoriche e analitiche per esaminare la correlazione tra cambiamento climatico e turismo e esplorare come questi due fenomeni si influenzino a vicenda.

This thesis presents a comprehensive analysis of the interrelation between climate change and tourism. More specifically, it focuses on the town of Monterosso al Mare. The first part of the study draws on existing literature to provide an analysis of climate change and its global consequences. Moreover, it examines the tourism sector and its connection to climate change. The relation between tourism and climate change is bidirectional. On the one hand, it is crucial to understand how tourism contributes to climate change. This is addressed in the second chapter, which discusses data about the emissions produced by the transport sector and accommodation facilities. On the other hand, it is equally important to examine how climate change affects tourism. Examples include the deterioration of destinations, change in seasonality, and shifts in tourist flows. These issues are discussed in the third chapter. The following section provides the background knowledge that is necessary to fully understand the case study conducted in Monterosso al Mare. The fourth chapter describes the territory of Cinque Terre, its history and the characteristics of tourism in these small towns. Special attention is paid to the phenomenon of overtourism. The chapter also outlines the effects of climate change on Cinque Terre, an area that is particularly vulnerable to extreme weather events. Finally, the last chapter provides the analysis and discussion of results of the case study conducted in Monterosso al Mare. A questionnaire was administered to 32 local traders, individuals who work and, for the most part, live in the area, with the aim of assessing their perception of climate change, and of how it evolved over time and how it affects their activities and the tourist flows. In conclusion, this thesis wants to integrate both theoretical and analytical knowledge to examine the correlation between climate change and tourism, and to explore how these two phenomena influence each other.
