I GENOVESI A MARSIGLIA NELLA SECONDA METÀ DEL XVIII SECOLO

Abstract

Questa tesi, presentata nel 2025, nasce in realtà da un interesse storiografico più arretrato: più precisamente, il primo vero approccio alla materia fu in occasione di una illuminante lezione tenuta dal Professor Paolo Calcagno il 25 marzo 2021, all’interno di un ciclo di interventi seminariali del Corso di Formazione alla Cittadinanza, nominato Marginali e diritti, dal titolo “Nazioni”: le comunità straniere nei porti del Mediterraneo in età moderna, organizzato dall’Università degli studi di Genova. Da lì, l’interesse crebbe e ne scaturì una tesi di laurea triennale in Storia, dal titolo Nationes: i genovesi in età moderna a Lisbona e a Cadice, discussa il 13 dicembre 2021 presso l’Università degli studi di Genova. Benché trattandosi di gruppi di persone che si trovavano allocate nell’Atlantico iberico, ciò consentì di studiare da vicino le opere della comunità scientifica che aveva scritto testi e saggi sulla materia, e la presente tesi è sicuramente frutto di un certo modo di pensare le comunità genovesi d’oltremare: pur essendo diverse le destinazioni, per lo storico delle migrazioni, in questo caso, è lecito applicare il medesimo modus operandi per cercare di capire di più sull’organizzazione e la vita di questi gruppi di persone legate pur sempre al mare, ai traffici commerciali così come a tutti quei mestieri “di terra” influenzati da esso, nonché alle situazioni professionali più variegate. In occasione della laurea magistrale in Scienze storiche, questa volta affrontata in un doppio titolo internazionale con l’Université d’Aix-Marseille, si è scelto dunque di puntare sulla comunità genovese, sempre in senso largo, che per varie ragioni operava o si era trasferita nell’orbita del porto di Marsiglia, andando a indagare, e, per quanto possibile, coadiuvando la presente tesi con gli studi già pubblicati dagli storici nel corso del tempo, la presenza ligure nella seconda metà del XVIII secolo.

This thesis, presented in 2025, actually stems from a more backward historiographical interest: more precisely, the first real approach to the subject was during an enlightening lecture given by Professor Paolo Calcagno on 25 March 2021, as part of a cycle of seminar papers in the Citizenship Training Course, named Marginalities and Rights, entitled ‘Nations: foreign communities in Mediterranean ports in the modern age’, organised by the University of Genoa. From there, interest grew and resulted in a three-year degree thesis in History, entitled ‘Nationes: the Genoese in the Modern Age in Lisbon and Cadiz’, discussed on 13 December 2021 at the University of Genoa. Although they were located in the Iberian Atlantic, this allowed for a close study of the works of the scientific community that had written texts and essays on the subject, and the present thesis is certainly the result of a certain way of thinking about the Genoese communities overseas: although the destinations were different, for the historian of migrations, in this case, it is legitimate to apply the same modus operandi to try to understand more about the organisation and life of these groups of people who were still linked to the sea, to trade as well as to all those ‘land’ trades influenced by it, and to the most varied professional situations. For the master's degree in historical sciences, this time tackled in an international double degree with the Université d'Aix-Marseille, it was therefore decided to focus on the Genoese community, again in the broad sense, which for various reasons operated or moved into the orbit of the port of Marseille, going to investigate, and, as far as possible, assisting the present thesis with studies already published by historians over time, the Ligurian presence in the second half of the 18th century.
