Produzione e consumo del tabacco a Genova in età moderna: la fabbrica di Sestri Ponente

Abstract

Il tabacco, introdotto in Europa dopo le esplorazioni del Nuovo Mondo, divenne rapidamente un bene di largo consumo, influenzando profondamente la società, l'economia e le istituzioni statali. Nonostante i tentativi di limitarne l'uso, la sua diffusione fu inarrestabile, inserendosi nei processi di mondializzazione e transculturazione dei secoli XVII e XVIII. Questa ricerca analizza la regolamentazione del tabacco attraverso le privative, il mercato illegale e il ruolo della fabbrica di Sestri Ponente nella produzione e distribuzione del prodotto. Il primo capitolo esplora la diffusione del tabacco in Europa, mentre il secondo approfondisce il sistema delle privative, con un focus sulla privativa genovese. Il terzo capitolo esamina il contrabbando e i privilegi legati alla commercializzazione clandestina, concentrandosi sulla realtà di Sestri Ponente e sulla produzione in Venezia e Corsica. L’ultimo capitolo è dedicato alla fabbrica di Sestri Ponente, al suo direttore Giacomo Lajolle e alla documentazione inventariale. Basata su fonti archivistiche e bibliografiche, la ricerca mira a ricostruire il ruolo economico e sociale del tabacco, con particolare attenzione alla Repubblica di Genova.

Tobacco, introduced to Europe after explorations of the New World, quickly became a widely consumed commodity, profoundly influencing society, the economy and state institutions. Despite attempts to restrict its use, its spread was unstoppable, becoming part of the globalization and transculturation processes of the 17th and 18th centuries. This research analyzes the regulation of tobacco through privatisations, the illegal market, and the role of the Sestri Ponente factory in the production and distribution of the product. The first chapter explores the spread of tobacco in Europe, while the second delves into the privative system, with a focus on the Genoese privative. The third chapter examines smuggling and the privileges associated with clandestine marketing, focusing on the reality of Sestri Ponente and production in Venice and Corsica. The last chapter is devoted to the Sestri Ponente factory, its director Giacomo Lajolle, and accounting records. Based on archival and bibliographical sources, the research aims to reconstruct the economic and social role of tobacco, with particular attention to the Republic of Genoa.
