La nascita della floricoltura e dell'industria dei profumi in Provincia di Imperia nel XX secolo: la lavanda un fiore dimenticato.

Abstract

Questo progetto nasce con il desiderio di approfondire la storia della floricoltura nella Provincia di Imperia nel XX secolo, ancora oggi è conosciuta dai turisti di tutto il mondo come la Riviera dei fiori, ma nella memoria collettiva degli imperiesi non è stata tramandata e ricordata la storia delle industrie della profumeria e il ruolo cruciale di un fiore: la lavanda. La ricostruzione cronologica degli eventi non è semplice a causa delle poche fonti documentarie disponibili, la ricerca è stata effettuata: nell’Archivio di Stato di Imperia, nell’Archivio della Camera di Commercio Riviere di Liguria e nella Biblioteca civica “F. Corradi” di Sanremo. Illustrato il quadro generale dell’agricoltura della penisola nel 1861, la presa di coscienza del governo di quanto sia importante per il Paese, analizzando le soluzioni adottate per potenziarla e ripercorrendo la lunga tradizione agricola della Provincia, nella quale emerge la coltura dell’olivo e della sua crisi all’inizio del Novecento, a causa di un insetto. Durante la crisi dell’olivicoltura entra in scena una figura decisiva, Mario Calvino “il rivoluzionario”, che getterà le basi per l’avvento della floricoltura, che diventerà la fonte di guadagno della Provincia, una soluzione di fronte alla crisi dell’olivicoltura, che ha fatto la storia dell’economia e dell’agricoltura del territorio. I fiori attireranno viaggiatori da tutto il mondo, dando vita al turismo, ulteriore fonte di profitto, effetto dei cambiamenti sociali del periodo che permettono di poter viaggiare. Successivamente si inizia ad intravedere una “fase preindustriale”, nella quale è protagonista la lavanda e l’arte della distillazione, grazie a Guido Rovesti, gli agricoltori cercano di imitare e osservare la vicina Francia che vanta una prestigiosa attività da diversi secoli, ponendo le basi per la fase industriale dei profumi nella Provincia di Imperia, una storia ormai dimenticata da tutti gli imperiesi.

This project was born with the desire to deepen the history of floriculture in the Province of Imperia in the twentieth century, still known by tourists from all over the world as the Riviera of flowers, but in the collective memory of the imperiesi has not been handed down and remembered the history of perfumery industries and the crucial role of a flower: lavender. The chronological reconstruction of events is not easy because of the few documentary sources available, the research was carried out: in the State Archive of Imperia, in the Archive of the Chamber of Commerce Riviere of Liguria and in the Civic Library "F. Corradi" of Sanremo. Illustrated the general picture of agriculture in the peninsula in 1861, the awareness of the government of how important it is for the country, analyzing the solutions adopted to enhance it and retracing the long agricultural tradition of the Province, in which the cultivation of the olive tree and its crisis at the beginning of the twentieth century, due to an insect. During the olive-growing crisis a decisive figure enters the scene, Mario Calvino "the revolutionary", who will lay the foundations for the advent of floriculture, which will become the source of income of the Province, a solution to the olive-growing crisis, which has made the history of the economy and agriculture of the territory. The flowers will attract travelers from all over the world, giving rise to tourism, another source of profit, effect of the social changes of the period that allow you to travel. Later you begin to glimpse a "pre-industrial phase", in which the lavender and the art of distillation is the protagonist, thanks to Guido Rovesti, farmers try to imitate and observe the neighboring France that boasts a prestigious activity for several centuries, laying the foundations for the industrial phase of perfumes in the Province of Imperia, a history now forgotten by all the imperiesi.
