"Riferimenti culturali e umorismo nel sottotitolaggio interlinguistico: il caso della serie Paquita Salas"

Abstract

Questa tesi esplora le sfide della traduzione audiovisiva (TAV), con un focus dedicato alla traduzione dell’umorismo e dei riferimenti culturali extralinguistici (ECR) nella serie TV Paquita Salas (2017). La prima parte consiste in un quadro teorico incentrato sulla traduzione audiovisiva, con un approfondimento dedicato alla sottotitolazione interlinguistica. In seguito, l’attenzione si sposta sul trattamento dell’umorismo e dei riferimenti culturali nella sottotitolazione. In particolare, si esaminano le caratteristiche dell’umorismo, così come le sfide che questo rappresenta nell’ambito traduttivo. Inoltre, si offre una classificazione dettagliata delle battute che si possono riscontrare nei sottotitoli e le relative strategie traduttive. Allo stesso modo, vengono approfondite le caratteristiche dei riferimenti culturali extralinguistici, attraverso una spiegazione delle loro diverse categorie e modi in cui possono essere trasmessi nel testo di arrivo. La seconda parte, più pratica, si concentra sull’analisi della serie TV oggetto di studio. L’analisi pratica si suddivide in due sezioni. Nella prima, si analizza l’adattamento italiano delle battute più significative dal punto di vista traduttologico e si discute la loro resa nei sottotitoli. Nello specifico, si valuta se la traduzione abbia preservato l’efficacia umoristica o se vi siano delle lacune. Nella seconda sezione, si studia la frequenza con cui i riferimenti culturali extralinguistici appaiono nella serie e si spiega come essi siano stati adattati, spiegati o rimossi nei sottotitoli per renderli accessibili agli spettatori italiani. L’obiettivo di questa tesi è di offrire spunti sulle complessità della sottotitolazione e di fare luce sulle problematiche che sorgono nella traduzione di elementi umoristici e culturali dallo spagnolo all’italiano.

This thesis explores the challenges of audiovisual translation (TAV), with a focus on the translation of humor and extralinguistic cultural references (ECR) in the Netflix TV series Paquita Salas. The first part of this work consists of a theoretical framework on audiovisual translation, in particular on interlingual subtitiling. Then the focus shifts to the analysis of the treatment of humor and ECR in subtitling. More specifically, this thesis explores the features of humor as well as the challenges that it poses in translation. It also offers a detailed classification of the main types of verbal and non-verbal jokes that can be found in subtitling and how to address them. Additionally, it delves into the study of the nature of ECR, by explaining how they can be classified and rendered into the target text. The second and more practical part of this work focuses on the Netflix TV series Paquitas Salas. The practical analysis is divided into two main sections. The first one discusses the Italian adaptation of the most significant jokes in the series and compares it with the source text. The second one examines how frequently ECR appear in the TV series and how they are translated, adapted, or omitted in the target text. The aim of this thesis is to put emphasis on the complexities of subtitling and to highlight the issues that arise when translating humorous and cultural elements from Spanish into Italian.
