Trame oscure. Dinamiche familiari e complessi psichici nel cinema di Ari Aster

Abstract

Questa tesi si propone di analizzare in profondità la filmografia del regista americano Ari Aster, con particolare attenzione ai suoi tre lungometraggi: Hereditary (2018), Midsommar (2019) e Beau is Afraid (2023). Il lavoro si concentra su come Aster esplori dinamiche familiari e complessi psicologici, utilizzando gli Archetipi Junghiani – in particolare l’Ombra, l’Anima e il Vecchio Saggio – come strumenti per riflettere le paure e i traumi sia dei suoi personaggi che degli spettatori. Attraverso questi archetipi, Aster affronta temi legati alla fragilità dell’identità umana, alla difficoltà di riconciliarsi con le proprie ombre e alla gestione del trauma intergenerazionale.

La tesi si sviluppa attraverso l’analisi dei singoli film, evidenziando come Aster utilizzi il genere horror non solo per generare tensione e paura, ma anche per affrontare problematiche profonde e universali della società contemporanea. Tra i temi principali emergono la repressione emotiva, la disgregazione familiare e il senso di appartenenza. Il lavoro conclude con un confronto tra Aster e il regista greco Yorgos Lanthimos, ponendo in evidenza come entrambi, pur con stili differenti, esplorino temi di controllo e sottomissione, decostruendo il concetto di famiglia tradizionale.

Questa tesi dimostra come il cinema di Ari Aster non si limiti a intrattenere, ma inviti lo spettatore a una riflessione profonda, fungendo da specchio per le ansie e le sfide della società contemporanea.

This thesis aims to analyze in depth the filmography of American director Ari Aster, with particular attention to his three feature films: Hereditary (2018), Midsommar (2019) and Beau is Afraid (2023). The work focuses on how Aster explores family dynamics and psychological complexes, using Jungian Archetypes – particularly the Shadow, the Soul and the Wise Old Man – as tools to reflect the fears and traumas of both his characters and viewers. Through these archetypes, Aster addresses themes related to the fragility of human identity, the difficulty of reconciling with one's shadows and the management of intergenerational trauma.

The thesis develops through the analysis of individual films, highlighting how Aster uses the horror genre not only to generate tension and fear, but also to address profound and universal problems of contemporary society. Among the main themes emerge emotional repression, family disintegration and the sense of belonging. The work concludes with a comparison between Aster and the Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, highlighting how both, despite having different styles, explore themes of control and submission, deconstructing the traditional concept of family.

This thesis demonstrates how Ari Aster's cinema does not simply entertain, but invites the viewer to deep reflection, acting as a mirror for the anxieties and challenges of contemporary society.
