Abstract

Il De Lapidibus di Marbodo di Rennes fotografa la mentalità di un uomo medievale che realizzò un’opera che riscosse tanto successo da portare alla diffusione di nozioni che attestano quali informazioni sulle pietre e i loro benefici circolassero in quel periodo. Nella volontà di indagare le fonti e la fortuna del lapidario di Marbodo di Rennes, si ricostruisce la storia di un testo che riscosse molto successo e fu successivamente citato anche da grandi enciclopedisti e da vari intellettuali. Uno degli scopi principali del lavoro è quello di creare un dialogo fra autori dell’antichità e quelli del Medioevo per restituire al lettore la curiosa storia delle gemme preziose e le loro proprietà terapeutiche. Infatti, fra le sue fonti si trovano alcuni nomi come quello di Plinio il Vecchio, Isidoro di Siviglia, Damigeron-Evax e altri intellettuali consultati da Marbodo per realizzare la sua opera. Infine, per le caratteristiche mediche delle pietre, il De Lapidibus si inserisce nel settore della letteratura scientifica poiché le descrizioni di tali oggetti presentavano anche indicazioni delle loro proprietà curative.

One of the main purposes of the work is to create a dialogue between ancient and medieval authors to give the reader the curious history of precious gems and their therapeutic properties. In fact, among his sources there are some names such as Pliny the Elder, Isidore of Seville, Damigeron-Evax and other intellectuals consulted by Marbodo to carry out his work. Finally, due to the medical characteristics of the stones, De Lapidibus fits into the sector of scientific literature since the descriptions of these objects also presented indications of their healing properties.
