Verso la Sostenibilità Ambientale dei Traghetti: Normative e Soluzioni

Abstract

In the current context, the increasing focus on environmental sustainability is encouraged by the rise in temperature growth rates, which have increased by 1.1°C compared to the pre-industrial period, with potentially disastrous repercussions, especially for less developed countries. In response to this emergency, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was established, which, through the periodic meetings between member states known as the Conference of Parties (COP), has dedicated itself to establishing international goals and regulations in the environmental field. The 2015 Paris Agreement (COP21) marked an important turning point, initiating a more rigorous process for sustainability. Among the results of this process is the European Green Deal, an agreement between Member States to establish strategies for reducing emissions. The aim of the research is to identify and analyse the main solutions in the maritime sector in response to these more stringent regulations, with particular reference to the ferry sector. This is motivated by the fact that the maritime sector requires priority action, being responsible for about 3.3% of global emissions. Efforts to address this challenge have been coordinated through meetings of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), which has progressively approved strategies and targets, culminating in the MEPC80 decision to achieve the ambitious target of zero greenhouse gas emissions in the sector by 2050.

Nel contesto attuale, la crescente attenzione verso la sostenibilità ambientale è catalizzata dall'aumento dei tassi di crescita delle temperature, che hanno portato a un incremento di 1,1°C rispetto al periodo preindustriale, con potenziali ripercussioni disastrose, soprattutto per i paesi meno sviluppati. In risposta a questa emergenza, era stata istituita la United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), la quale, attraverso le periodiche riunioni tra gli stati membri note come Conference of Parties (COP), si è dedicata a stabilire obiettivi e normative a livello internazionale nel campo ambientale. L'Accordo di Parigi del 2015 (COP21) ha segnato un importante punto di svolta, dando inizio a un processo più rigoroso per la sostenibilità. Tra i risultati di questo processo vi è il Green Deal europeo, un accordo tra gli Stati Membri volto a stabilire strategie per la riduzione delle emissioni. La finalità della ricerca è quella di individuare ed analizzare le principali soluzioni nel settore marittimo, in risposta a queste più stringenti normative, con particolare riferimento al settore traghetti. Questa scelta è motivata dal fatto che il settore marittimo richiede un intervento prioritario, essendo responsabile di circa il 3,3% delle emissioni globali. Gli sforzi per affrontare questa sfida sono stati coordinati attraverso incontri del Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), che ha progressivamente approvato strategie e obiettivi, culminando nella decisione della MEPC80 di raggiungere l'ambizioso obiettivo di emissioni zero di gas serra nel settore entro il 2050.
