San Giorgio e la Mezzaluna - Per una storia delle forme di difesa dalla corsa barbaresca nel ponente genovese

Abstract

L'elaborato qui proposto si pone l'obiettivo di fornire, tramite l'utilizzo di fonti bibliografiche e di documenti rinvenuti negli archivi genovesi, una visione del pericolo barbaresco nel suo insieme durante l'età moderna, fornendo precise informazioni su alcuni dei più famosi corsari dell'epoca, sui mezzi da loro utilizzati e sulle modalità con le quali essi compivano le loro scorrerie. Si procede inoltre ad un'analisi delle istituzioni presenti nelle reggenze di Barberia, confrontandole con quelle degli Stati europei dall'altra parte del Mediterraneo. L'elaborato procede successivamente analizzando la Repubblica di Genova (della quale si fornisce anche una panoramica istituzionale) e in particolar modo il ponente della città Dominante e le sue fortificazioni. Si procede quindi con un'analisi approfondita sui vari sistemi di difesa adottati dai vari Stati per opporsi alla minaccia corsara, con particolare attenzione posta su alcune delle fortificazioni ancora presenti nel territorio ponentino genovese.

The essay here proposed aims to provide, through the use of bibliographic sources and documents found in the Genoese archives, a vision of the Barbary danger as a whole during the Modern Age, providing precise informations on some of the most notorious corsairs of the time, on the means they used and on the methods which they carried out their raids. I also proceed with an analysis of the institutions present in the Barbary states, comparing them with the European ones on the other side of the Mediterranean sea. The thesis then proceeds by analyzing the Republic of Genoa (of which an institutional overview is also provided) and in particular the west zone of the Dominant city and its fortifications. I ultimately proceed with an in-depth analysis of the various defense systems adopted by the various states to oppose the corsair threat, with particular attention paid to some of the fortifications still present in the western Genoese territory.
