Arte, devozione ed epidemie. I santi taumaturghi nella Genova del XVII secolo

Abstract

L’elaborato consiste in uno studio sull’iconologia dei santi taumaturghi, incentrandosi in partico-lar modo sugli effetti dell’epidemia di peste che colpì Genova tra il 1656-1657. Vengono analizza-te: l’iconografia della stessa con opere di artisti come Domenico Fiasella ed altri artisti affini, l’influenza dell’epidemia sullo stile e le opere commissionate ai maggiori artisti presenti nella città. Dapprima è delineato il contesto storico e gli effetti dell’epidemia sulla città, correlato ad importanti testimonianze come quelle di Padre Antero o Suor Maria Raggi. Successivamente si studiano e si ricercano i santi protettori dalla peste, i Patroni di Genova e gli intercessori. L’elaborato continua con un’analisi della devozione mariana e la realizzazione di ex-voto. A concludere lo studio vengono analizzati i topos iconografici e iconologici della peste diffusi nel corso dei secoli nella storia dell'arte e l’influsso della Grande Peste sugli stessi.

The paper analyses the plague that struck Genoa in 1656-1657 and how the terrible disease affect-ed the lives of artists and patronage society. The thesis is divided as follows: in the first part I've tried to summarize the conception around the plague and its historical aspects. The second part focuses around plague saint's and their devotion in 1600’s Genoa. Then, there is a focus on the devotion to the Immaculate during the plague and the making of related ex-voto My thesis does not only focus on the miraculous prints as objects, but also on the history and the cultural heritage of the arts and saint's devotion during the plague. It explores the use people made of the artworks about saints, the ways they were understood to work miracles and the devotional practices associated with them at the time of the Plague. In its final part the essays shows the reasons behind iconographic and iconological topic of the plague.
