Committenti genovesi a Novi Ligure: affreschi e apparati decorativi nei palazzi dell’aristocrazia tra Seicento e Settecento. Mecenati, artisti e documentazione d’archivio.

Abstract

La presenza dell’aristocrazia genovese a Novi Ligure, tra il Seicento e il Settecento, ha guidato la capitale d’Oltregiogo verso il rinnovamento architettonico del centro storico e, più in generale, del gusto artistico. Il presente scritto ha voluto mettere in luce il ruolo primario della committenza, sia all’interno delle loro abitazioni, sia in forme di mecenatismo nel resto della città e nei dintorni, in particolare nelle chiese e negli oratori. Gli artisti chiamati a lavorare a Novi risultano, nella maggioranza dei casi, largamente influenzati dal gusto e dalle soluzioni sperimentate nella città ligure. Dall’influenza di grandi artisti come la bottega dei Calvi e Domenico Parodi, all’arrivo in città di artisti e architetti come Gio. Antonio Ricca, i Lagomaggiore, Pietro Cantoni, Innocenzo Ceppi, Andrea Leoncini e Pietro Cavatorta, già attivi presso l’aristocrazia genovese, fino agli interventi dei vogheresi Muratori e del novese Luigi Tassistro, artisti locali che finirono inevitabilmente per essere influenzati dalle richieste della committenza genovese. Il ricorso all’analisi di alcuni inventari e libri di conto ha consentito di fornire un’idea di quelle che furono le dimore al tempo della permanenza in loco dei proprietari. Infine, i riferimenti agli interventi di restauro, effettuati in anni più o meno recenti, vogliono fornire ulteriori spunti di riflessione su quanto ancora è possibile valorizzare e quanto ancora è possibile approfondire di questi due secoli, durante i quali la città di Novi ha rivestito un ruolo inedito nel corso di tutta la sua storia, sino ai giorni nostri.

The presence of the Genoese aristocracy in Novi Ligure, between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, guided the capital of Oltregiogo towards the architectural renewal of the historic center and, more generally, of artistic taste. The present paper aims to highlight the primary role of patrons, both within their homes and in forms of patronage in the rest of the city and its surroundings, in particular in churches and oratories. The artists called to work in Novi are, in most cases, largely influenced by the taste and solutions experimented in the Ligurian city. From the influence of great artists such as the Calvi workshop and Domenico Parodi, to the arrival in the city of artists and architects such as Gio. Antonio Ricca, the Lagomaggiores, Pietro Cantoni, Innocenzo Ceppi, Andrea Leoncini and Pietro Cavatorta, already active among the Genoese aristocracy, up to the interventions of the Vogheri Muratori and Luigi Tassistro, local artists who inevitably ended up being influenced by the requests of the Genoese patrons. The analysis of some inventories and account books has made it possible to provide an idea of what the dwellings were like at the time of the owners' stay on site. Finally, the references to the restoration interventions, carried out in more or less recent years, want to throw further food for thought on how much it is still possible to enhance and how much it is still possible to deepen these two centuries, during which the city of Novi has played an unprecedented role throughout its history, up to the present day.
