Abstract

In Russia la letteratura fu per secoli un ambiente inaccessibile alle donne, non solo perché considerato incompatibile con la femminilità, ma anche per un motivo di natura pratica: la mancanza di un’istruzione adatta. La tesi ripercorre la storia dell’istruzione e della scrittura femminile, mostrandone i progressi e gli ostacoli dal regno di Pietro I (1689-1725) alla seconda metà del XIX secolo. Tra le scrittrici più prolifiche e famose dell’Ottocento vi fu Nadežda Chvoščinskaja (1825-1889) che, nonostante la popolarità tra i contemporanei, fu quasi del tutto dimenticata nel corso XX secolo. Nata in provincia, Chvoščinskaja mostra tramite la sua vita e le sue opere le difficoltà di essere una donna, una scrittrice e una provinciale nella Russia del XIX; nel suo romanzo, La Signora Ridnieff (Ridneva, 1878) analizza la realtà provinciale femminile da un punto di vista inconsueto, quello di un’attrice decaduta, rivelando la miseria e i soprusi che si celano dietro le quinte.

In Russia, literature was for centuries inaccessible for women, not only because it was considered incompatible with femininity, but also for a practical reason: the lack of suitable education. This thesis traces the history of women's education and women’s writing, showing its progress and obstacles from the reign of Peter I (1689-1725) to the second half of the nineteenth-century. One of the most prolific and famous women writers of the nineteenth-century was Nadezhda Khvoshchinskaya (1825-1889) who, despite her popularity among her contemporaries, was almost completely forgotten during the twentieth-century. Born in the province, Khvoshchinskaya shows through her life and works the difficulties of being a woman, a woman writer, and a provincial in nineteenth-century Russia; in her novel, La signora Ridnieff (Ridneva, 1878) she analyzes provincial women's reality from an unusual point of view, that of a fallen actress, revealing the misery and the abuse that are hidden behind the scenes.
