I festival culturali partecipativi : il caso studio Het TheaterFestival

Abstract

Che ruolo hanno i festival nella società contemporanea? Conservano ancora le antiche funzioni di coesione sociale o si sono trasformati in strumenti primari di profitto economico? E quali impatti producono in termini di coinvolgimento attivo del pubblico? A partire da queste domande, la presente tesi si propone di esplorare il ruolo dei festival nella società contemporanea, analizzandone l'evoluzione storica e mettendone in evidenza la dimensione sociale e partecipativa. Attraverso un'indagine approfondita che integra prospettive antropologiche e sociologiche, si delinea il concetto di "festival" e si analizzano gli effetti sociali che questi eventi hanno avuto nel corso della storia. In particolare, affronterò criticamente le sfide legate alla rigenerazione urbana e all'efficacia dei progetti partecipativi nel favorire la coesione sociale. Successivamente, verrà esaminate l'incidenza dei festival culturali sulle comunità e sugli spazi urbani, considerando anche le cause della diffusione crescente di tali manifestazioni e l’ impatto economico che generano. L’ultimo capitolo di questa è rivolto al caso studio del Het Theater Festival, un festival di arti performative fiammingo, al quale ho partecipato attivamente durante questa ricerca. Particolarmente interessante è il progetto partecipativo della WijkJury - Giuria di Quartiere, che il festival ha introdotto nel 2023 e che rappresenta un'opportunità unica per esplorare le dinamiche di coinvolgimento della comunità all'interno dei festival.

La Giuria di Quartiere si impegna sin dalle prime fasi della sua programmazione ad includere i cittadini con minori opportunità di accesso alle risorse culturali, spesso esclusi dalla tradizionale audience teatrale. Questo approccio inclusivo si riflette nella selezione dei membri della giuria, evidenziando il potenziale dei festival culturali come strumenti di coesione sociale e partecipazione attiva della comunità.

What role do festivals play in contemporary society? Do they still retain the ancient functions of social cohesion or have they been transformed into primary tools of economic profit? And what impacts do they produce in terms of active audience engagement? Starting from these questions, this thesis aims to explore the role of festivals in contemporary society, analyzing their historical evolution and highlighting their social and participatory dimensions. Through an in-depth investigation that integrates anthropological and sociological perspectives, I will outline the concept of "festivals" and analyze the social effects that these events have had throughout history. In particular, I will critically address the challenges related to urban regeneration and the effectiveness of participatory projects in fostering social cohesion. Next, the incidence of cultural festivals on communities and urban spaces will be examined, including considering the causes of the increasing prevalence of such events and the 'economic impact they generate. The last chapter of this one addresses the case study of the Het Theater Festival, a Flemish performing arts festival in which I actively participated during this research. Of particular interest is the participatory project of the WijkJury - Neighborhood Jury, which the festival introduced in 2023 and which represents a unique opportunity to explore the dynamics of community involvement within festivals.

The Neighborhood Jury is committed from the earliest stages of its programming to include citizens with fewer opportunities to access cultural resources, who are often excluded from traditional theater audiences. This inclusive approach is reflected in the selection of jury members, highlighting the potential of cultural festivals as tools for social cohesion and active community participation.
