"Le cenerentole della carta stampata". Maria Bellonci e il primo censimento delle riviste letterarie italiane.

Abstract

Maria Bellonci è nota per il suo ruolo di fondatrice del Premio letterario Strega e si ricorda per i suoi romanzi storici; tuttavia, si conosce poco la sua attività di articolista. Dalla fine degli anni Venti Maria collaborò per diversi quotidiani e, in questo studio, si analizza una precisa esperienza professionale che svolse al periodico «Il Giorno» tra la fine degli anni Cinquanta e l’inizio degli anni Sessanta del Novecento. Bellonci si occupò di svolgere un’inchiesta sulle riviste letterarie italiane, confezionò un censimento e provò a indagare il rapporto tra i lettori e il prodotto letterario rivista. L’elaborato inquadra le domande sollevate da Bellonci a margine dell’inchiesta e le affronta attraverso l’esame di diversi aspetti: l’analisi della rubrica culturale del quotidiano milanese all’interno del panorama letterario italiano; la biografia della scrittrice e giornalista romana; la storia dei periodici definendoli con una selezionata tassonomia. Il lavoro comprende due Appendici. La prima contiene la trascrizione degli articoli firmati da Bellonci e delle schede confezionate per il censimento. La seconda presenta il regesto delle corrispondenze fra la scrittrice e le redazioni delle riviste: esso costituisce una parte del Carteggio Bellonci conservato presso la Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Roma. Il lavoro di trascrizione dell’elenco delle lettere e delle schede sono stati gli strumenti utilizzati al fine di mappare cronologicamente e geograficamente le lettere e sviluppare una categorizzazione per tipologia delle riviste. L’analisi dell’argomento e la circostanza di essere stata la prima scrittrice ad analizzare il fenomeno rendono, quindi, il gruppo di articoli che riguarda il censimento di grande interesse per definire il ruolo ricoperto dal “prodotto rivista” e delineare il contributo culturale di Maria Bellonci al dibattito letterario dello scorso secolo.

Maria Bellonci is known for her role as a founder of the Strega literary prize and she is remembered for her historical novels; however, little is known about her activities as a columnist. From the late 1920s collaborated for several newspapers and, in this study, we analyse a specific professional experience she carried out at the newspaper «Il Giorno» between the late 1950s and the early 1960s. Bellonci undertook a survey of Italian literary magazines, compiled a census and attempted to investigate the relationship between readers and the literary magazine itself. The paper frames the questions raised by Bellonci at the margin of her investigation and addresses them by taking into account several aspects: the analysis of the Milanese newspaper's cultural column within the Italian literary scene; the biography of the Roman writer and journalist; the history of periodicals by defining them with a appropriate taxonomy. The work comprises two Appendices. The first contains the transcription of the articles signed by Bellonci and the sheets prepared for the census in the cultural pages of «Il Giorno». The second presents a record of the correspondence between the writer and the editors of the magazines: it forms part of Bellonci’s correspondence, kept at the Central National Library in Rome. The work of transcribing the list of letters and forms were the tools used in order to map the letters chronologically and geographically and to develop a categorisation by type of the magazines. Analysis of the topic and the fact that she was the first writer to analyse the phenomenon thus make the group of articles concerning the census of great interest. Bellonci was the first writer to analyse the world of the literary magazines, writing about them in a weekly fixed column: therefore, her contribution is of great interest in defining the role played by the “magazine product” and in outlining Maria Bellonci's cultural contribution to the literary debate of the last century.
