Le 'Storie' di Rodolfo il Glabro: un'analisi

Abstract

L’obiettivo di questa tesi è stato quello di verificare che quanto scritto da Rodolfo il Glabro nelle sue Cronache dell’Anno Mille possa essere inquadrato in un testo dal taglio storico e soprattutto che quanto narrato dal monaco cluniacense sia credibile. In passato gli storici che volevano utilizzare l’opera di Rodolfo per una ricostruzione del passato in termini di fatti, circostanze, nomi, luoghi e tempi precisi restavano profondamente delusi. Si è cercato di trovare quale sia stato il motivo che ha indotto il monaco a scrivere questo testo in tal modo. E’ egli stesso a chiedersi il motivo per cui, ai suoi giorni, non si è trovato nessuno in grado di tramandare ai posteri, sotto qualunque veste formale, le varie vicende, degne di memoria, che riguardavano sia le chiese di Dio sia i popoli. Così Rodolfo intende legare passato e presente per ritrovare le tracce di Dio nella storia, in modo che queste possano riuscire utili ai suoi contemporanei e, più tardi, a destinatari estranei. La visione è profondamente unitaria, anche se a prima vista può sembrare confusionaria, di una storia universale. A Rodolfo non interessano i ritmi del quotidiano, bensì solo i fatti memorabili e perciò degni di essere raccontati, come anche prodigi, visioni, miracoli, essi pure frattura del consueto. Ne risulta quindi una ricerca di efficacia edificatoria affidata ad exempla, non di verità.

The objective of this thesis was to verify that what Rodulfus Glaber wrote in his Historiarum can be framed in a text with a historical perspective and above all that what the Cluniac monk narrated is credible. In the past, historians who wanted to use Rodulfus's work for a reconstruction of the past in terms of precise facts, circumstances, names, places and times were profoundly disappointed. We tried to find the reason that led the monk to write this text in this way. He himself wonders why, in his day, no one was found capable of handing down to posterity, under any formal guise, the various events worthy of memory, which concerned both the churches of God and the peoples . Thus Rodulfus intends to link past and present to find the traces of God in history, so that these can be useful to his contemporaries and, later, to foreign recipients. The vision is profoundly unitary, even if at first glance it may seem confusing, of a universal history. Rodulfus is not interested in the rhythms of everyday life, but only in memorable events and therefore worthy of being told, as well as wonders, visions, miracles, which are also a fracture of the usual. The result is therefore a search for edifying effectiveness entrusted to exempla, not truth.
