FUNZIONI DELL'ATTO DI SCUSA IN INGLESE BRITANNICO E INGLESE AMERICANO: UNO STUDIO SU CORPUS

Abstract

L'atto di scusarsi costituisce un elemento essenziale nelle interazioni umane, esso fa parte di quelle norme sociali e culturali specifiche che compongono una comunità linguistica. Questa ricerca si propone di esaminare le variazioni pragmatiche nell'espressione delle scuse tra l'inglese britannico e l'inglese americano, con particolare attenzione all'uso della formula apologetica sorry. Attraverso l’introduzione di concetti teorici riguardanti il mondo della pragmatica, il presente elaborato analizza, sia in maniera quantitativa che qualitativa, le prime 100 occorrenze della formula apologetica in due dei corpora della lingua inglese: il British National Corpus per l’inglese britannico e il Corpus of Contemporary American English per la varietà americana. Il fine è stato inizialmente quello di identificare i diversi tipi di scuse e confrontarne le modalità di utilizzo nelle due varietà linguistiche. L'obiettivo principale è stato quello di confermare o smentire i folk beliefs o credenze popolari che attribuiscono una maggiore politeness alla varietà British della lingua inglese. Attraverso un'analisi comparativa approfondita, il lavoro intende fornire una comprensione parziale ma dettagliata delle dinamiche linguistiche che influenzano l’espressione delle formule apologetiche nelle comunità britanniche e americane.

The act of apologizing constitutes an essential element in human interactions; it is part of those specific social and cultural norms that make up a linguistic community. This research aims to examine pragmatic variations in the expression of apologies between British English and American English, with particular attention to the use of the apologetic formula sorry. By introducing theoretical concepts regarding the world of pragmatics, this paper analyses, both quantitatively and qualitatively, the first 100 occurrences of the apologetic formula in two of the English language corpora: the British National Corpus for British English and the Corpus of Contemporary American English for American English. The initial aim was to identify the different types of apologies and compare their usage patterns in the two linguistic varieties. The main objective was to confirm or refute folk beliefs that attribute greater politeness to the British variety of the English language. Through a thorough comparative analysis, the study aims to provide a partial but detailed understanding of the linguistic dynamics that influence the expression of apologetic formulas in British and American communities
