"Un caso quattrocentesco di propaganda antiebraica: il martirio di Simonino da Trento. Diffusione dell'iconografia in area bresciana".

Abstract

Con la seguente tesi, si è voluto indagare il caso quattrocentesco di Simonino da Trento, un bambino di circa due anni e mezzo, presunta vittima di omicidio rituale ebraico e venerato per secoli come martire innocente. Il primo capitolo non solo esamina i fatti circostanti, ma approfondisce anche l'accusa di omicidio rituale, basata sulla credenza diffusa che gli ebrei fossero coinvolti in sacrifici rituali di bambini cristiani, con l'intento di reiterare e deridere la crocifissione di Gesù, utilizzando il sangue cristiano per scopi magici e religiosi. Il secondo capitolo si concentra sull'analisi di un'area in cui il culto di Simonino ha avuto particolare successo, ossia l'area bresciana, esaminando il ruolo svolto dalla propaganda francescana nella diffusione del culto del giovane martire. Nel terzo capitolo, l'attenzione è dedicata alla produzione di immagini legate al martire, partendo dai prototipi iconografici rappresentati dalle dodici xilografie che illustrano la sequenza cronologica degli eventi, per poi esaminare gli affreschi quattrocenteschi presenti nell'area bresciana. In particolare, viene approfondito il confronto tra l'immagine del fanciullo e la tipologia iconografica dell'Imago Pietatis, anch'essa emotivamente impattante e utilizzata come strumento nella propaganda antiebraica promossa dai francescani.

With the following thesis, the aim was to investigate the fifteenth-century case of Simonino da Trento, a child of about two and a half years old, presumed to be a victim of Jewish ritual murder and venerated for centuries as an innocent martyr. The first chapter not only examines the surrounding facts but also delves into the accusation of ritual murder, based on the widespread belief that Jews were involved in ritual sacrifices of Christian children, intending to reenact and mock the crucifixion of Jesus, using Christian blood for magical and religious purposes. The second chapter focuses on the analysis of an area where the cult of Simonino was particularly successful, namely the Brescian area, examining the role played by Franciscan propaganda in spreading the cult of the young martyr. In the third chapter, attention is dedicated to the production of images related to the martyr, starting from the iconographic prototypes represented by twelve woodcuts illustrating the chronological sequence of events, and then examining the fifteenth-century frescoes in the Brescian area. In particular, the comparison between the image of the child and the iconographic type of the "Imago Pietatis" is deepened, which is also emotionally impactful and used as a tool in the anti-Jewish propaganda promoted by the Franciscans.
