Forme di protezione contro i barbareschi. Organizzazione delle comunità della Riviera Ligure per la difesa del territorio durante la fine del XVI secolo.

Abstract

L'elaborato ha come obiettivo l'analisi della corsa barbaresca, collocata all'interno del conflitto cinquecentesco tra i due grandi blocchi ispano-italiano asburgico e ottomano-barbaresco, dapprima con una visione generale del fenomeno fino ad arrivare allo studio delle comunità genovesi della Riviera di Ponente. Nel primo capitolo, dopo aver affrontato la differenza tra pirateria e corsa, si prende in esame l'origine di tale scontro tra le due grandi potenze. L'impero ottomano destinato a diventare una grande potenza, ereditiera dell'impero arabo e bizantino, si rivolse al mondo arabo, mentre la Spagna continuava le sue conquiste oltre Gibilterra. Con la conquista di Tunisi nel 1574 da parte dell'Impero Ottomano la Spagna perde il controllo del Nord Africa, mettendo fine alla guerra. La configurazione della corsa barbaresca mutò così in corsa mercantile, con finalità prettamente economiche. Nel secondo capitolo si analizza come alcuni Stati della penisola italiana si difesero contro le incursioni a terra portate avanti dai corsari barbareschi con il fine di schiavizzare la popolazione per ricavarne profitto. Le fortificazioni erano una difesa statica terrestre situate sulla costa che comprendevano torri, borghi, castelli e fortezze e permettevano protezione non solo dalle incursioni a terra ma proteggevano anche la navigazione. L'ultimo capitolo si concentra sulla realtà genovese, in particolare viene analizzato il comportamento delle comunità della Riviera di Ponente. L'analisi si è tenuta all'interno dell'ultimo ventennio del XVI secolo, prendendo in considerazione le lettere scambiate tra le comunità e il governo genovese.

The aim of thesis of mine is the analysis of the Barbary corsairs war situated in the sixteenth century's conflict between the two great blocks spanish-italian and ottoman-barbaresque, at first with an overwiew of the phenomenon and afterwards look at genoan communities of the western Ligurian coast. In the first chapter, after the analyses about the differences between the tactics used by pirates and corsairs, it's studied the beginning of the encounter between the two great powers. The Ottoman Empire was destined to become a great power, as the heir of the Byzantine and Arabian Empire it applied his interests at the arabian side while the Spain kept on to conquer beyond Gibraltar. Because of the conquest of Tunis in 1574 from the Ottoman Empire, the Spain loses command on North Africa putting an end to the war. The Barbars was changes in a commercial war with economic purposes. In the second chapter it's analyzed how some italian peninsula States protected themselves against barbars ashore raids, raids with the only purpose to enslave the population and derive economic profit. The fortifications were a ground static defense located on the coast which included towers, villages, castles, fortresses and they allowes protection not only from ground raids but they also protected shipping. The last chapter focuses on genoan reality, in particular it is analyzed the community western Ligurian coast behaviour. The analysis has been held during the last twenty years of XVI century, it studies the letters sent between local communities and Genoan government.
