La prostituzione a Pompei. Tracce archeologiche di un mestiere antico.

Abstract

Intento della ricerca è quello di illustrare il funzionamento e i luoghi dedicati all’esercizio della prostituzione a Pompei. Questo scopo è stato perseguito attraverso l’uso di fonti (antiche e non), le tracce archeologiche e attraverso lo studio sul campo. Volontà, anche, di dare voce e rispetto a queste donne e a questi uomini, troppo spesso schiave e schiavi. Per riuscire in questo scopo, è stato necessario esaminare tutta l’area di Pompei (con tutte le sue regiones, le sue insulae e i suoi civici), dal vivo laddove possibile o, attraverso l’aiuto di vari volumi, tra cui, sicuramente fonti inestimabili, sono stati quelli di Pompei: pitture e mosaici e, l’utilizzo del sito pompeiinpictures. In molti casi, è stato impossibile, infatti, accedere ad alcune aree, in quanto chiuse. In primo luogo, sono state cercate fonti che trattassero il tema della prostituzione (in generale e a Pompei), descrivendo questo mestiere e i luoghi dove questa professione poteva essere esercitata. In secondo luogo, ci si è concentrati sull’individuare i luoghi dove questa professione veniva svolta. Conclusa questa ricerca, è stato elaborato un catalogo, al fine di illustrare tutte le strutture rinvenute a Pompei, sviluppando per ognuna una descrizione.

The aim of the research is to illustrate the functioning and the places dedicated to the practice of prostitution in Pompeii. This aim was pursued through the use of sources (ancient and otherwise), archaeological traces and through field studies. Willingness, also, to give voice and respect to these women and men, too often slaves. To achieve this goal, it was necessary to examine the entire area of ​​Pompeii (with all its regions, its insulae and its civics), live where possible or, through the help of various volumes, among which, certainly, sources priceless were those of Pompeii: paintings and mosaics and the use of the Pompeiinpictures site. In many cases, it was impossible to access some areas as they were closed. Firstly, sources were sought that dealt with the topic of prostitution (in general and in Pompeii), describing this profession and the places where this profession could be practiced. Secondly, we focused on identifying the places where this profession was carried out. Once this research was concluded, a catalog was developed in order to illustrate all the structures found in Pompeii, developing a description for each one.
