In Inghilterra e non solo: scienza e politica nel carteggio Mazzei-Fabbroni.

Abstract

Uno dei sentimenti più forti che ci possono essere tra due persone è sicuramente l'amicizia. Questa tesi è proprio una storia di due incredibili intellettuali, scienziati e politici, Filippo Mazzei e Giovanni Fabbroni, che si scambiarono opinioni, sperimentarono insieme, frequentarono gli stessi luoghi, si chiesero vicendevolmente favori e che condivisero gli stessi interessi; prima di tutto, però, si tratta di un rapporto tra due amici sul finire dell'epoca dei lumi. In questo racconto verranno analizzati con attenzione sia le vite dei nostri protagonisti che il contesto in cui operarono; il punto cardine sarà però l'esame della corrispondenza epistolare tra i due amici, che darà una chiara immagine del loro rapporto ma soprattutto del mondo in cui vissero. È vero che questi due intellettuali toscani sono poco noti al gran pubblico però entrambi sono due figure incredibili; la loro voglia di viaggiare, di scoprire innovazioni e rendere migliore la vita dell'uomo è senza pari, influenzati dall'epoca in cui operarono. Un'epoca dove l'uomo si elevò come mai prima per superare le antiche tradizioni di Ancien Regime. Questa “inquietudine illuminista” portò, sia Mazzei che Fabbroni, ad incontrare le personalità scientifiche, e non solo, più in vista del loro periodo, da Lavoisier a Franklin; senza contare che il primo fu amico intimo di Thomas Jefferson e il secondo incontrò personalmente Napoleone. Tutto ciò fu reso possibile dalla loro sfrenata esigenza di viaggiare col fine di ampliare il più possibile le loro rispettive conoscenze, sia di persone che scientifiche. Soprattutto durante l'analisi delle lettere si capirà quanto profonda può essere un'amicizia tra due persone che avevano in mente un mondo nuovo, non più antico ma moderno.

One of the strongest feelings there can be between two people is definitely friendship. This thesis is a story of two incredible intellectuals, scientists and politicians, Filippo Mazzei and Giovanni Fabbroni, who exchanged opinions, experimented together, frequented the same places, asked each other for favors and shared the same interests; first of all, however, it is a relationship between two friends at the end of the Age of Enlightenment. In this story, both the lives of our protagonists and the context in which they operated will be carefully analyzed; the pivotal point, however, will be the examination of the epistolary correspondence between the two friends, which will give a clear image of their relationship but above all of the world in which they lived. It is true that these two Tuscan intellectuals are little known to the general public, but both are two incredible figures; their desire to travel, to discover innovations and make man's life better is unparalleled, influenced by the era in which they operated. An era where man rose as never before to surpass the ancient traditions of the Ancien Régime. This "Enlightenment restlessness" led both Mazzei and Fabbroni to meet the most prominent scientific personalities of their period, from Lavoisier to Franklin; not to mention that the former was a close friend of Thomas Jefferson and the latter met Napoleon personally. All this was made possible by their unbridled need to travel in order to expand their respective knowledge as much as possible, both personal and scientific. Especially during the analysis of the letters, you will understand how deep a friendship can be between two people who had in mind a new world, no longer ancient but modern.
