Magnetocaloric refrigeration has developed in recent decades in response to the need to
eliminate environmentally harmful refrigerants and improve the efficiency of refrigerators.
Instead of using a compressor, and thus a pressure jump, to achieve a temperature change
in a refrigerant fluid, materials can be employed that change their temperature in response
to a magnetic field alteration.
In this paper, we will describe the underlying physical concepts behind the operation of
these systems and showcase their main applications.
We will construct, using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software such as Comsol
Multiphysics, a simple model of the passage channel for the typical refrigerant fluid in
these devices.
We will then use the model to evaluate the convective heat transfer coefficient in a
transient periodic regime (oscillating motion) and the friction coefficient.
Finally, we will describe and draw conclusions by processing the data with computational
tools
